Moving to the South

13 December 2017 | Tanzania, Dar es Salaam

After collecting heaps of paperwork of VSO to secure our safety and explain about the financial systems, we went off to a Swahili course.
Swahili proved to be a simple language, but I still had some trouble as it is completely different from my own language.
The lessons were nevertheless quit fun. In the evenings we enjoyed a dinner at Cape Town Fisch Market or the local Indian Restaurant.
In the morning we did quite some running to look around and on the beach.

In our second week of Dar, we were supposed to go on Monday, no Tuesday, no Wednesday morning, Yes Wednesday afternoon we left!

It was a long road to the south, and we were stuffed in the company car with all our luggage and water filters and mosquito nets. Two volunteers of our group had to take the bus south as the car was too full.
During the trip we listened to the nice live story of my project manager. He really climbed up from being a helper of his father and farmer to be, to an excellent student that passed all schools and Universities.

As we departed in the afternoon and had to stop already quite soon as our driver and the project manager did not have lunch yet, we were also driving in the dark. Our driver tried to catch up some time by speeding and overlooking a speedbump. That did really test the shock absorbers of the car and our nerves.
Around 22:00 we finally arrived in Lindy where we checked into a dodgy hotel, heard the rumours of cockroaches, but thanks to a power cut, we could quickly not see anything, so we feel asleep.

The next morning, we did see where we had arrived last evening. The breakfast of the hotel was simple but sufficient, I had some bread, an egg and some pasta.
As the project manager of Eirini was not there, she decided to come with us and go to VETA Lindi. The vocational school is just up north of Lindi, so we had to drive back the road we had yesterday.
As expected, the school was quite empty, most of the students did already left and were waiting for there exam results.
evertheless, we could see the workshops (classrooms) and meet a bit more elaborately with the registrar (second important person after the principle) He hoped I could fix some PC's in the PC room for him.
After a very quick handshake of the principle (he forgot something in the school and drove past the school when he was going on vacation) we also did leave the VETA school again and went back to Lindi.
At Lindi we inspected the small VSO office and met two persons connected to our projects.
They invited us to go for lunch in Lindi and we had the fedorite Tanzanian mail with them.
At the end of the mail my project manager managed to get some living lobsters and scare some of our group.
Then we drove off to Mtwara, my home for the next five months.
Although much shorter than the previous day, the almost 90 minutes ride was quite long. They brought us in a nice hotel in the city centre (Le Vile Hotel) Our rooms were compared to what we were used to in Kay's lodge quite luxurious. We enjoyed some rest there and the free internet.
In the evening there was a goodbye BBQ for one of the Volunteers that was leaving and the party also did function as a welcome party for us the new arrivals.
It was quite dark, but still we enjoyed the meat and the drinks.
The project car brought us back to the hotel and we fell fast asleep!
